It is a message that we see more and more often, in newspapers, on TV, and in schools. Water Conservation is a hot topic. But just why is saving water such a serious issue? After all, over 70% of the earth is covered with the stuff, right? While that may be true, only 3% of all of the water on earth is drinkable, and as little as 0.03 percent of this is useable by humans. Water conservation has become urgent over the past few decades, with litres of fresh water being used in food production, manufacturing, agriculture, and cleaning. Add the rise in population, with thousands more people needing fresh drinking water to survive, and global resources of water are being stretched to their limits. Rivers and lakes are shrinking rapidly, and scientists predict that many will dry up and disappear completely within the next two decades if action isn’t taken to preserve them… |
